Sandra Smith, MPH, PhD

Dr. Smith earned her masters degree in public health from the University of Washington, Seattle. Through her company she develops educational content and materials for patients and healthcare consumers. Her research interests focus on the effects of information on health status and treatment outcomes, particularly in the 0 to 3 period (preconception to the child's 3rd birthday). She is a recognized expert in health literacy and patient education. Her professional experience includes health services marketing, hospital public affairs and community relations, and professional modeling.
She is editor of the award-winning series Beginnings Pregnancy Guide and author of the Beginnings Parents Guide. She is a frequent speaker and author on pregnancy and prenatal care, parent education and literacy, writing for readers with low literacy skills, evaluating health education materials, developing and testing culturally and linguistically appropriate materials, patient satisfaction, and the effects of information-giving on birth outcomes. Ms. Smith is a Northwest native living in Seattle. She is a mother, grandmother, foster mother, and mother-in-law. Personal and leisure activities include yoga, weightlifting, woodland gardening and world travel.
